☀️When You’re Feeling “Meh” (and How to Shake It Off Without Selling Your House and Moving to Bali)

You know that mood.

Not sad exactly.

Not happy either.

Just… meh.

Like a lukewarm cup of tea you forgot about until it’s too late to save.

Maybe you woke up with it.

Maybe it crept in halfway through a Tesco shop.

Maybe you’ve been stuck in it for weeks and now you’re wondering if “meh” is your new personality.

If you’re a woman somewhere in your 30s, 40s, or early 50s, you know this feeling intimately. Life is a full plate right now — kids (or not), career (or not), aging parents, laundry that reproduces at night, and a metabolism that seems to have quietly resigned without giving two weeks’ notice.

First of all: you’re not broken!

Feeling “meh” is not a moral failing. It’s often just your brain and body waving a little flag that says: Hey, we need a shake .

Here’s how to give yourself that shake — no Bali retreat required.

1. Check Your Basics Before You Overthink It

When the meh hits, it’s tempting to spiral into existential questions: Am I living my purpose? Should I become a potter on the Aran Islands?

But first:

Did you drink water today? (Tea or coffee doesn’t count. I’m sorry.)

Have you eaten something with actual nutrients? (Kinder Bueno doesn’t count! I’m sorry.)

Have you moved your body in the last 24 hours?

Sometimes the “meh” is just your body whispering: Please feed me, hydrate me, and let me stretch further than to reach for your phone to doom scroll!

2. Break the “Same-Same” Cycle

Meh loves routine. It feeds on monotony. If every day feels like copy-paste, you’re basically sending “meh” an invitation to move in.

Try:

Taking a different route to work.

Listening to a new podcast instead of your usual news doomscroll.

Switching up your breakfast. (It doesn’t need to be Pancakes Tuesday to indulge!)

Tiny novelty jolts your brain into “Oh! Something interesting is happening” mode.

3. Audit Your Input

Your mental state is a reflection of what you consume — and I don’t just mean food.

Social media highlight reels? Meh fuel.

Endless true crime before bed? Hello anxious dreams.

News on a loop? Recipe for dread.

Try swapping at least one mental snack a day for something nourishing — a book you’ve been meaning to read, music from your teenage years, or an actual conversation with a living human in front of you.

4. Get Sunlight Like You Mean It

I’m not talking about the 20 seconds between your door and the car. Your brain thrives on daylight — it literally resets your mood chemistry. Step outside for at least 10 minutes a day, preferably in the morning. No sunglasses if you can help it. Just you, the light, and maybe a cup of tea. Bonus: real life Vitamin D that isn’t a tablet!

5. Do One Thing That’s Pointlessly Delightful

We forget that joy doesn’t have to be productive.

Dance to a ridiculous playlist while you unload the dishwasher.

Buy yourself flowers just because you like them.

Draw something badly.

Bake a cake for no reason.

Pointless joy is like a little rebellion against the monotony.

6. Check for the Deeper Stuff

If “meh” has moved in and started forwarding its post to your brain, it might be something more — low-grade depression, burnout, hormonal changes.

That doesn’t make you weak.

It makes you human.

Talking to a therapist, your doctor, or a trusted friend isn’t overreacting. It’s tending to yourself like you matter (because you do).

“Meh” is like cloudy weather — sometimes it passes in an afternoon, sometimes it hangs around. You can’t always control it, but you can give yourself the best conditions for the sun to break through.

And if all else fails, remember: you’re a grown add woman. You can buy yourself something nice in the shop on a Wednesday just because you feel like it. That’s power.

If you are looking to connect with like minded women, carve a space for yourself once a month to reset and shake off the meh then do take a look at my Sacred Space Women’s Circle in The Junction Clongriffin the first Sunday of each month from 5-615pm.
