Is That Your Throat Chakra or Did You Miss Lunch?

A curious tale of energy, expression, and the creaking messenger within.
If you were a kid in the '80s (or just had excellent taste in retro cartoons), you might remember The Trap Door—that brilliantly odd claymation show where a blue blob named Berk lived in a spooky castle and was constantly warned:"Don’t you open that trapdoor... ’Cause there’s something down there!"

That line has been living rent-free in my head for years—but never more so than when I’m in a healing space and my throat chakra decides to make an entrance. There’s this sound—less gurgle, more creaking ancient cellar door from the cartoon—that rises from deep within me. It’s not my stomach. It’s not nerves. It’s the unmistakable sensation of my throat chakra slowly swinging open like something’s been locked down there… and is finally ready to come up.
Just like Berk in the cartoon ( oooohhhh and he’s even blue like the throat chakra!!) , I don’t always know what’s going to come through that “trapdoor.”
Sometimes it’s mine.
Sometimes it belongs to someone else in the room.
But the creak always tells me: something’s shifting.
As a Reiki practitioner and sound bath guide at Dusting Off My Soul, I’ve come to trust that sound.
That opening.
That subtle but powerful cue that energy is on the move—and the throat chakra is doing what it does best: making space for expression, truth, and the release of old, hidden things.
If you have been in a healing space close to me you will have heard it and know exactly what sound I’m talking about!
I’ve never considered the throat chakra to be my favourite, it’s definitely the one with the most flair for the dramatic. Would you expect my chakras to be anything less than dramatic??
The moment energy begins to shift—whether I’m channeling Reiki healing or stepping into the vibrational flow of a sound bath—my throat chakra makes its debut like an old wooden door slowly swinging open after years of silence. After a week’s holiday the very first connection back to my energy work and there it was loud and proud! Guess who’s back! Back again!!
✨The Throat Chakra Enters the Chat
In the world of energy healing, each chakra has its own flavour. The throat chakra, Vishuddha, is the keeper of truth, communication, and expression. When it activates, it’s not always subtle. Sometimes it tickles. Sometimes it constricts. And sometimes—especially for me—it makes an audible, creaking-door kind of sound, as if something deep within is pushing to be let out.
And here’s the interesting part: it doesn’t always belong to me!
As a Reiki practitioner and sound healer at Dusting Off My Soul, I’ve come to realise that my throat chakra is incredibly empathic. The moment I step into a healing session, it starts scanning the energetic atmosphere. What shows up in my throat is often a reflection of what’s stirring beneath the surface for others in the room.
Unspoken truth.
Repressed words.
Old emotional residue.
My throat chakra starts creaking like it’s cracking open a vault, making space for something to rise.

✨Sound as a Signal
What used to feel like an awkward noise now feels like an invitation. That creaking, shifting sensation? It’s a sacred message. My body’s way of saying, “Pay attention—there’s something here.”
During Reiki healing, it often happens when someone’s truth is ready to surface. Even if they’re lying silently on the table, I can feel it: their energy is preparing to speak. And in sound baths, as vibrations move through the space, my throat responds to the resonance of what’s being released. It’s like a translation of silence into sensation.
And most of the time, the person receiving the healing doesn’t need to say a word. The throat chakra is doing its job energetically—clearing, activating, and preparing them to speak, or simply to feel.
✨What the Creak Really Means
To me, the creak has become a trusted friend. A soul-signal. A reminder that healing isn’t always loud or dramatic. Sometimes it’s quiet, strange, and deeply profound. Sometimes, the door to your truth opens slowly, with a groan that’s been waiting lifetimes to be heard.
So if you ever find yourself deep in a sound bath or Reiki session and hear your own throat creak like an old attic door—pause. That might not be hunger. It might be your soul stretching, dusting itself off, and saying: I’m ready.
And if it happens in one of my sessions at Dusting Off My Soul, just know—I hear it too and if it doesn’t believe me mine will make the noise for you! And I’m holding space for whatever’s trying to come through x
